54 mm vs 58 mm Portafilter: Which Accessories Fit Your Machine?

Breville's Bambino Plus and Barista Express use a 54 mm portafilter, so most espresso accessories won't fit. Which tools fit which machine, and how to check.

The Breville Bambino Plus and Breville Barista Express use a 54 mm portafilter, so 58 mm tampers, dosing funnels, puck screens, paper filters and bottomless portafilters do not fit them. Tools that never touch the basket rim (a WDT tool, a coffee scale, bean tubes and espresso glasses) work with any machine.

Why portafilter size matters

The portafilter basket is a fixed size. A tamper must match it: too small and it leaves loose coffee around the edge; too big and it won't go in. A dosing funnel has to sit on the basket rim, and a puck screen or paper filter has to cover the whole coffee bed. A portafilter has to lock into your machine's group head. Only tools that work above or outside the basket, like a WDT tool or a scale, are universal.

How to check your portafilter size

  1. Check the manual or the manufacturer's specifications. It is usually listed as the portafilter or basket size.
  2. Measure the basket. Measure across the inside of the basket at the top.
  3. Read the accessory listing. Makers often size accessories slightly larger than the nominal size (for example, a 58.5 mm tamper for 58 mm baskets), so go by the machines and baskets the maker says it fits.
