Coffee setup
Compact Espresso Setup
Lattes and flat whites from a small counter: a fast-heating machine with automatic milk, an espresso grinder and a scale.
Quick answer
This setup pairs the Breville Bambino Plus (automatic milk frothing, about 3-second heat-up per Breville) with the Baratza Encore ESP grinder and the Timemore Black Mirror Basic 2.0 scale. Side by side, the machine and grinder take about 33 cm (13 in) of counter width, so it suits small kitchens.
- Who it's for
- Beginners who mostly drink milk-based espresso drinks and have limited counter space.
- What you'll need
- Around 35–40 cm of counter width for the machine and grinder side by side, and a nearby outlet.
- Counter space
- Both appliances are compact. Leave room above the grinder hopper and in front of the machine to remove the drip tray.
- Budget
- Editorial planning target: about $750 for the essentials. This is an editorial planning figure, not a current retailer price.

How this setup works, step by step
- Weigh 18 g of beans on the scale.
- Grind them on the Encore ESP, in the espresso range (settings 1–20).
- Brew on the Bambino Plus, with your cup on the scale: stop at about 36 g of espresso (a 1:2 ratio).
- Steam milk with the automatic wand: choose the temperature and foam level and let it texture the milk for you.

Counter space at a glance
| Width | Depth | Height | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breville Bambino Plus | 19.6 cm (7.7 in) | 31.8 cm | 31 cm |
| Baratza Encore ESP | 13 cm | 15 cm | 34 cm |
| Side by side | About 33 cm (13 in) |
What fits, and what to add later
The Bambino Plus uses a 54 mm portafilter, so 58 mm tampers, funnels and puck screens won't fit. A WDT tool, espresso glasses and bean tubes fit any machine. See 54 mm vs 58 mm portafilter accessories.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Compact Espresso Setup good for beginners?
Yes. The Bambino Plus froths milk automatically and heats up in about 3 seconds (per Breville), which removes the two hardest parts of learning espresso.
Why not choose a machine with a built-in grinder?
A separate grinder like the Encore ESP can also grind for filter coffee and can be upgraded later. If you prefer one appliance, see the All-in-One Espresso Setup.
Can I use a hand grinder instead of the Encore ESP?
Yes. The 1Zpresso J-Ultra is quieter and smaller, and suits one or two shots a day.
How much counter space does this setup need?
About 33 cm (13 in) of width for the machine and grinder side by side; allow 35–40 cm so you have room to work.
Which accessories fit the Bambino Plus?
Accessories made for 54 mm Breville portafilters, plus anything that doesn't touch the basket, such as a WDT tool, scale and glasses.
