Quick answer

The espresso accessories worth buying first are a scale and a WDT tool: they make the biggest difference for the least money, and they fit any machine. Then add a self-levelling tamper and a dosing funnel. Everything else is optional. Before you buy, check your portafilter size: most tools are 58 mm, and Breville's Bambino Plus and Barista Express use 54 mm.

  • Must-have: scale and WDT tool
  • Big improvement: self-levelling tamper and dosing funnel
  • Nice to have: puck screen or paper filters, bottomless portafilter, bean tubes, glasses

The espresso routine, step by step

Each tool solves one step of making a shot: weigh the beans, grind, dose into the basket, distribute the grounds, tamp, then brew. Buy tools for the steps that give you trouble, not all at once.

How we chose

We only recommend equipment that is sold on amazon.com and documented by its manufacturer. We compared the specifications that change your daily routine (heat-up time, grinding, milk, size and upkeep) and explain the trade-offs in plain English. These are researched recommendations built from manufacturer information, checked on 30 October 2026; we have not tested these products ourselves, and we say so on every page. Figures such as heat-up times are the manufacturer's own and are credited to them. Read our editorial policy.

WDT Tool V2.1 with Stand

Nine 0.23 mm needles break up clumps so water flows evenly. Works with every machine.

  • Nine thin 0.23 mm stainless steel needles stir without compacting the bed
  • Helps prevent channelling for more even extraction
  • Magnetic stand keeps it tidy on the counter

Stirring the grounds with fine needles (the Weiss Distribution Technique) breaks up clumps and evens out the coffee bed, so water can't rush through weak spots and leave the shot sour. This channelling is a common cause of uneven shots, and a WDT tool is one of the cheapest fixes.

2. Self-levelling tamper: a flat tamp every time

Normcore

Spring-Loaded Coffee Tamper V4 58.5mm

The Normcore V4 is a self-levelling, spring-loaded palm tamper with a 58.5 mm base, so every tamp is flat and uses the same pressure.

A plate resting on the basket rim keeps the tamp level, and a spring gives the same pressure every time; three springs (15, 25 and 30 lb) let you choose how firm. It takes the guesswork out of tamping. Fits 58 mm baskets.

3. Dosing funnel and dosing cup: less mess

A magnetic dosing funnel makes the basket taller, so grounds land in it instead of on the counter and you can stir with a WDT tool without spills. A dosing cup lets you weigh beans, catch the grounds and drop them neatly into the basket.

4. Puck screen or paper filters: a cleaner machine

Both sit in the basket to spread the incoming water and keep grounds off the shower screen. A puck screen is reusable stainless steel; paper filters are disposable, and can also go under the coffee for a cleaner-tasting shot. See Puck screen vs paper filters.

5. Nice to have

A bottomless portafilter shows the shot pouring so you can spot problems; bean tubes hold pre-weighed doses; double-wall glasses keep espresso hot and show off the crema.

Frequently asked questions

What espresso accessories do I actually need?

A scale and a WDT tool make the biggest difference. After that, a self-levelling tamper and a dosing funnel. Puck screens, bottomless portafilters and bean tubes are optional extras.

What does a WDT tool do?

It stirs the ground coffee in the basket with fine needles to break up clumps, so the water flows evenly. That reduces channelling, a common cause of sour, uneven shots.

Do 58 mm accessories fit Breville machines?

Not the Bambino Plus or Barista Express: they use 54 mm portafilters. Buy 54 mm tampers, funnels and puck screens for those. A WDT tool, scale and glasses fit any machine.

Which espresso accessories fit every machine?

Tools that don't touch the basket rim: a WDT tool, a coffee scale, single-dose bean tubes and espresso glasses (check the height under your spouts).

Is a puck screen worth it?

It is a nice-to-have. It spreads the water more evenly and keeps the group head cleaner, so there is less to clean after each shot. It won't fix a bad grind.

What is a bottomless portafilter for?

It has no spouts, so you can watch the coffee leave the basket and see channelling or uneven tamping as it happens. It's a learning tool.
