Our take

Buy it if

Think twice if

Single-use, so they are an ongoing cost

Advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • 200 virgin wood-pulp filters with a metal storage case
  • Help spread the water flow and reduce channelling
  • Stop grounds sticking to the shower screen

Limitations

  • Single-use, so they are an ongoing cost
  • Sized for 58.5 mm baskets; smaller baskets need a different size

Overview

Paper filters in espresso are a newer trick. Placed on top of the puck, a paper disc works like a disposable puck screen: it spreads the water and keeps the group head clean. Placed under the coffee, at the bottom of the basket, many people find it gives a cleaner-tasting shot with less sediment.

They are cheap to try, and IKAPE's pack of 200 comes with a metal case to keep them flat and dry.

Compare with a reusable etched puck screen if you would rather not buy filters regularly.
