How this setup works, step by step
- Heat water in the Stagg EKG to around 93–96 °C (200–205 °F).
- Grind 15 g of coffee medium-fine on the Encore.
- Rinse a V60 size 02 paper filter in the dripper with hot water, then add the coffee.
- Weigh and time on the scale: pour about 40 g to bloom, wait 30–45 seconds, then pour slowly to 250 g.
- Finish at around 3 minutes. Too fast? Grind finer. Too slow? Grind coarser.
The full method is in how to make pour-over coffee.
What you'll also need
- Hario V60 size 02 paper filters
- Fresh whole-bean coffee
- A mug or small carafe for the dripper to sit on
Where to go next
Brewing for more people? A drip brewer makes a full pot hands-free: see Moccamaster vs Hario V60. Want a richer cup on some days? The same grinder and kettle work with a French press: see Hario V60 vs French press.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to start making pour-over coffee?
A dripper (such as the Hario V60 02) with its paper filters, a kettle, a scale and a burr grinder. A gooseneck kettle makes pouring much easier.
Is a gooseneck kettle necessary?
Not strictly, but the Stagg EKG's gooseneck spout makes a slow, even pour much easier and it sets the water temperature to the degree.
Can the Baratza Encore grind for pour-over?
Yes. It covers pour-over, drip, AeroPress and French press, though it isn't designed for espresso.
What recipe should I start with?
15 g of medium-fine coffee to 250 g of water (about 1:16), finishing at around 3 minutes.
How much counter space does a pour-over setup need?
Very little: only the kettle and grinder need a permanent spot. The dripper and scale fit in a cupboard.
