Overview
A bottomless portafilter gives you a front-row seat to your espresso. With no spouts underneath, you watch the coffee leave the basket. A happy shot pours as one smooth, honey-coloured stream from the centre, and it's genuinely mesmerising. Spurts or pale patches show exactly where water is rushing through, so you know whether to adjust your grind, your stir or your tamp.
Made for Breville. Normcore built this one for Breville's 54 mm group heads and lists the Barista Express; it comes with an 18 g filter basket. Check that your exact model is listed before you buy.
Your learning kit: stir with a WDT tool, tamp level with the Normcore 53.3 mm tamper, and pour into double-wall glasses to watch the crema settle.
Don't worry about the sprays: every spurt is a lesson. Keep notes, change one thing at a time, and enjoy watching your shots improve.
