Espresso Ratio Calculator

Your brew ratio compares the coffee you put in (the dose) with the espresso you get out (the yield). Enter both to get a target yield.

Typical double shot: 16–20 g.

Target yield

— g

g in × = g of espresso out.

Enter a dose between 5 and 30 g and a ratio between 1 and 4.

How it works

Yield = dose × ratio. An 18 g dose at 1:2 gives a 36 g target yield. Weigh the espresso in the cup on a scale; volume is unreliable because of crema.

  • Ristretto (around 1:1.5) — shorter, more concentrated.
  • Normale (around 1:2) — a common starting point.
  • Lungo (around 1:2.5 or more) — longer and lighter.

These are starting points, not rules. Adjust grind size to reach your target yield in roughly 25–35 seconds, then adjust by taste.
